- Shri Bhaktmal (138)
Gadadhar Bhatt was a reservoir of all virtues and a bestower of pleasure to all. He was naturally gentleman and a strict follower of the teachings of the acharyas. He was free of flaws like envy and desire, and an ocean of compassion to the destitutes. It was as though he had taken birth only to awaken exclusive devotion to Radha and Krishna in the people of the world. Once he had come to stay in Vrindavan he never left, absorbed in speaking nectar from the Bhagavata Purana. When the Supreme Truth in the form of Shyama Shyam are present in one’s heart, all the other divine attributes come of their own accord to remain there.
Birth and Childhood:
Some great personalities are endowed with divine virtues by birth. Shri Gadadhar Bhattaji was such a great man. He was bright and talented by birth, His voice was melodious and he was full of humility and kindness. He had virtuous nature. He used to sing the verses of Shri Krishn's beauty [and divine pastimes] with great love which He Himself have created.
When Shri Jiva Goswami heard a devotional poem of Shri Gadadhara Bhatt Ji, he sent him a letter:
Whenever saints came to the house of Shri Gadadhar Bhatt Ji, they often used to memorize the poems composed by him. In this way, the poems composed by him were sung far and wide by the saints.
In Shri Vrindavan, Shri Jiva Goswami heard a poem from someone's mouth.
Sakhi, Haun Syam Rang Rangi.
Dekhi Bikai Gayi Vah Moorati Soorati Maahin Pagi.
Sang Hutau Apanau Sapanau-sau Soi Rahi Ras Khoi.
Jaagehun Aagen Drishti Parai Sakhi Neku Na Nyaarau Hoi.
Ek Ju Meri Ankhiyan Mein Nisidyos Rahyau Kar Bhaun.
Gaay Charaavan Jaat Sunyau Sakhi! So Dhaun Kanhaiya Kaun.
Kaasaun Kahaun Kaun Patiyaabai, Kaun Karai Bakavaad.
Kaisen Ke Kahi Jaat Gadadhar Goonge Kau Gud Svad.
“Oh Sakhi! I have been colored in the hue of Shyam. On seeing his beautiful form, I sold my soul to him.I lost myself in his beauty. When I fall asleep I lose myself in dreams of him, And when I awake, I don’t see anything as separate from him. It is as though my eyes have been trapped by his form, like a bumblebee trapped at night in a lotus flower. O Sakhi, I have heard that Shri Krishna takes the cows for grazing, so which Krishna is this (because Shri Krishna is always with me). Who will listen to me? Who will believe me when I say it is all nonsense. How can Gadadhar explain any of this? I am like a dumb person trying to explain the taste of jaggary.”
On hearing this poem, Shri Jiva Goswami Ji was simultaneously delighted and disappointed, although the author had obvious devotion and talent, there was no mention of Sri Radharani. Nevertheless he thought, I would like to have the association of such a devotee and hear more of his songs. When he found out that Gadadhar Bhatta lived somewhere outside of Braj, He thought that such a devotee belongs in Vrindavan Dham. So He sent him a letter with two confidantes. The letter contained only this one verse written by Raghunath Das Goswami -
Anaradhya Radhapadambhojayugmamashritya Vrindatavim Tatpadakam.
Asambhashya Tadbhavgambhirachittaan Kutah Shyamasindhoh Rahasyaavagaah.
- Sva-Sankalpa-Prakash-Stotra (1)
One who has never worshipped, even once, the dust that sprinkles from Sri Radha’s lotus feet; who never took shelter, even once, to Her abode Shri Vrindavan Dham which is marked with her dainty tread, who never ever spoken to the Rasik devotees, colored in Her love; how foolish they who think that He can plunge into the secret sea of nectar that is Shyam [Krishn]!
Arrival in Vrindavan:
Both the saints sent by Jiva Goswami reached the village of Gadadhara Ji. It was early morning. Sunrise had not happened. Gadadhara Ji was brushing his teeth. The saints asked him - "Which is the house of Gadadhar Bhatt Ji in this village." Gadadhara was very happy considering that "I got darshan of saints and they have come to my house today. I will get the good fortune of serving the saints, I will get to hear the praises of God from their mouths. Today is the day of blessings for me." Bhatt Ji, immersed in the expressions of joy, spontaneously asked the saints - "Where have you come from."
The saints replied - "We have come from Shri Vrindavan."
When Bhatt Ji heard the word "Shri Vrindavan", he fell unconscious in ecstasy. The toothbrush fell away. Tears started flowing from his eyes. He had a strange condition. His heart was already immersed in divine feelings and when he heard the name of Shridham Vrindavan, the divine feelings overflooded and his body became unconscious. Both the saints handled him in astonishment. When the people came there, they told to the saints that this unconscious man is none other than Gadhar Bhatt Ji. The saints were surprised to hear this. They came near to Shri Gadadhar Bhatt Ji and told in his ears "We have brought a letter for you from Vrindavan."
Gadadhar Bhatt woke up as soon as the name of the letter entered his ears. As if his life was waiting for this letter. Taking the letter, he applied it with his head, with his eyes, with his heart. Reading the letter over and over again, tears were throbbing. Shri Gadadhar Bhatt Ji served the saints by offering food and then after distributing everything to the poor, he went to Vrindavan along with those saints.
Now Shri Gadadhar Bhatt Ji got the association of Shri Jiva Goswami and Shri Raghunath Das Goswami. He studied devotional literature from Jiva Goswami and now started narrating Shrimad Bhagwat in Vrindavan.
An Attempt to stigmatize Shri Gadadhara Bhatt by a woman in Vrindavan :
People from far and wide started coming to hear the soulful narration of Shrimad Bhagwat by Shri Gadadhar Bhatt. One of these listeners was Kalyan Singh, a Rajput resident of Dhaurahara village near Vrindavan. Kalyan Singh was pure-hearted, and He used to come regularly to listen to Shrimad Bhagwat.
He already had good faith of Lord in his heart, and with the association of a divine saint, the love of God arose in the heart. When Sri Krishn's love appears in the heart, the love towards the material life automatically disappears. Whether Kalyan Singh left the house or not; But He became detached from worldly pleasures. He started living like a self-restrained seeker.
Kalyan Singh's wife was a normal woman. It was intolerable for Her to see Her Husband’s devotional sentiment and dispassion towards her. Her fury rose on Shri Gadadhar Bhatta. She felt that it was Bhattji who had done something to her husband. As a result, she decided to take revenge on Bhattaji. By giving money to a pregnant beggar, she persuaded Bhattaji to slander.
Shri Gadadhar Bhattaji was narrating Shrimad Bhagwat. The audience was gathered. At the same time the pregnant beggar came and started saying- 'Maharaj! I am going to become a mother of your child soon, the time has arrived. Now, where do I go? Please arrange for my shelter!'
The audience had immense reverence for Shri Gadadhar Bhatt Ji. Hearing the words of the beggar, most of the people got angry and said - 'You are a liar, you shameless. Do you want to defame a saint? We will kill you!"
But Shri Gadadhar Bhatt said in the middle – 'What She is saying is true. You guys don't get angry.' Everyone was stunned by surprise. On the other hand, Bhatt Ji said to the woman - 'O Goddess! where were you till now? I always remember you. It is good that you have come today. Sit down, listen to the Bhagwat.'
The audience did not understand what was the matter? They were not ready to listen to this beggar. Their heart was beating painfully. One of them called the beggar aside and started asking "you swear and tell the truth." The mind of that beggar was also disturbed. She thought that such a great man who called me 'Goddess' even after saying such a lewd thing in a crowded society, did not even utter a harsh word to me, what hell would I bear by tarnishing such a great man. The beggar told the truth to that person that Kalyan singh’s wife has sent her and started crying bitterly.
Shri Gadadhar Bhatt Ji assured the beggar. A wave of joy spread among the audience. Kalyan Singh's eyes became red in anger. He started trembling with anger. Drawing the sword, he got up and ran towards his house. He wanted to kill the woman who tried to tarnish the great man. Bhatta Ji stopped him. He explained and ordered that he should not behave harshly with his wife.
Story of a Vaishnava Mahant who put red chilly powder in His eyes for shedding tears:
A Vaishnava Mahant also used to come to Shri Gadadhar Bhatt to hear the narration of Shrimad Bhagwat. But he was not pure-hearted. Due to being honored, he used to get a place in front of Shri Gadadhar Bhatt to sit. Tears started flowing from the eyes of almost all the listeners present there, but the tears did not come in the eyes of that Mahant. This caused great hesitation to Mahant. The next day Mahant brought a small bundle of red chilly powder with him. When the other audience started crying in the Katha (narration), Mahantji also rubbed the bundle on the eyes on the pretext of wiping the eyes. Now tears started falling from his eyes too.
A listener sitting behind him, next to Mahant, saw this action of Mahant. He also learned that there is red chili in the bundle. At the end of the Katha (narration), the listener met Bhatt Ji alone and said - 'The Mahant who comes in Katha is very arrogant. If tears do not come in his eyes, then he pretends to cry by rubbing a bundle of red chilies on his eyes’.
Shri Gadadhara Bhatt Ji was a great devotee of the Lord. How could He see the faults of others? On hearing that person's words, he went to Mahant. Paying obeisances to Mahant, he said. - 'Blessed are you! Blessed is your divine love! I have read and heard that those eyes which do not have tears after hearing the praises of God, they are worthy of putting the dust. But you turned out to be even greater devotee of God. To punish the eyes, you are putting red chili in them.'
Mahant bowed towards the feet of Shri Gadadhar Bhatt. Shri Bhatt took him to heart. Now the tears were flowing from the eyes of both the great men.
Story of a thief :
Once a thief came to Shri Gadadhar Bhatt Ji's hut. Whatever he got, he tied it. Bhatt Ji was watching everything lying down and was getting happy that if not a thief of butter (Shri Krishn), some of his companions came to his place. The bundle was heavy, the thief was not getting up. Shri Gadadhar Bhatt got up and picked up the bundle and helped him to take it away. The thief asked- 'Who are you?' Gadadhar Bhatt Ji told his name. The thief then threw the bundle and fell at his feet.
Bhatt Ji started explaining to him - 'Brother! You bothered to come in the dark night. You put in so much hard work. Surely your children will be hungry. You will need, take it all. The one who maintains the world will give me more tomorrow.'
The thief burst into tears. The soft heart Bhatt Ji was moved. He instructed the thief not to steal and to worship the Lord.
Context of Service to Lord:
Once Shri Gadadhara Bhatta Ji was cleaning the kitchen to prepare food for the service of the Lord. A servant came and informed - 'A devotee is coming with many gifts. Please wash your hands and talk to him. Till then I will clean the kitchen.'
Bhatta Ji explained to the servant - 'There is no greater task than serving the Lord. Leaving the service of the lord, whom should I rise to welcome? It is good if a devotee comes. Seeing me engaged in God's service, he will also get inspiration.'
In this way, Bhatta Ji devoted his whole life to the service of the Lord and narrating Shrimad Bhagwat. Due to his discourses and association, many beings were purified and engaged in the path of God.
Devotion towards Braj Dham :
Shri Gadadhar Bhatt Ji had such loyalty that he never wanted to leave Braj Dham and go anywhere else. One of his poems says that -
Haun Braj Mangnon Ju. Braj Taji Anat Na Jaoon Ju.
Budhe-bade Bhupati Bhutal Mein Data Soor Sujan Ju.
Kar Na Pasaaron Sir Na Navaoon Ya Braj Ke Abhiman Ju.
- Shri Gadadhar Bhatt, Vani, Updesh Pad
For Shri Gadadhara Bhatt, the Braj-Vrindavan abode is the best, because it is the one that bestows fearlessness. In the pride of this residence of Braj, Shri Gadadhar Bhatt Ji is not even ready to bow his head and spread his hands in front of anyone.
Disappearance:
Shri Gadadhara Bhatt Ji remained in Vrindavan while doing Bhagavad-Seva (service to the lord), Shrimad Bhagwat discourses and felicitating the saints throughout his life. In the end, he left his mortal body and attained the eternal association of his Lord Shri Krishn.
Shri Nabhadas Ji says in Shri Bhaktamal -

Sajjan Suhrid Susheel, Vachan Aaraj Pratipaalay.
Nirmatsar Nihakaam, Kripa Karuna Kau Aalay.
