There are primarily five Mahadevas residing in Braj. In Mathura, there is Bhuteshwar Mahadev; in Vrindavan, Gopeshwar Mahadev; in Kaman (Kamyavan), Kameshwar Mahadev; in Nandgaon, Nandishwar Mahadev (Aseshwar Mahadev); and in Govardhan, Chakreshwar Mahadev (Chakleshwar Mahadev).

“O Chakrateerth, adorned with Shri Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra, I bow to you. This sacred place, established by Shri Krishna, destroys all sins.”
When Indra, the king of the gods, became angry and unleashed a deluge to drown Braj, Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on the tip of his little finger to protect Braj. He instructed the Sudarshan Chakra to stay atop the mountain to stop the rain, and prayed to Lord Shiva to absorb the water in his matted locks and dry the land of Braj. The Sudarshan Chakra attempted to stop and dry the rainwater, but due to the torrential downpour, it could not completely dry the water. Then, Lord Shiva absorbed all the water into his locks, and the land was dried. The Sudarshan Chakra, however, became proud, thinking that it alone had dried the water and saved Braj. Seeing this pride, Shri Krishna said, “O Sudarshan, you are mistaken in your pride. It was Lord Shiva who absorbed all the water and dried Braj.” With these words, Shri Krishna established Lord Shiva here as Chakreshwar Mahadev, the Lord of the Chakra.
Later, Shri Krishna’s great-grandson, Shri Vajranabh Ji, established a Shivling at this site and built the Shri Chakreshwar Mahadev temple.
In front of the Chakreshwar Mahadev temple is the bhajan kutir of Shri Sanatan Goswami Ji, where he stayed and performed bhajan for several years. Opposite the Chakreshwar Mahadev temple is the temple of Shri Gaur Nitai. Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Shri Nityananda Prabhu, during their parikrama of Giriraj Ji, visited Chakreshwar Mahadev, performed darshan of Mansi Ganga and Parang Ghat, and rested here.
It is said that once, Shri Sanatan Goswami was troubled by mosquitoes at this site and considered moving to another place. However, Lord Chakreshwar himself assured him that there would be no further disturbance from mosquitoes at this location. Thus, Shri Sanatan Goswami decided to stay.
Location:
Shri Chakreshwar or Chakleshwar Mahadev is located in the northern direction of Mansi Ganga in Govardhan.
