- Shri Tulsidas (A letter sent to Mirabai)

Once, Mīrābāī asked Tulsīdās Jī, “My family members create obstacles in my path of devotion, what should I do?” In response to this question, Tulsīdās Jī composed this verse and sent it to her.

Those who do not love Lord Rām should be renounced like millions of enemies, even if they are extremely dear to us. [1]

Prahlād renounced his father Hiraṇyakaśipu, Vibhīṣaṇ his brother Rāvaṇa, Bharata his mother Kaikeyī, Bālī his guru Śukrācārya, and the Gopīs of Braj renounced their husbands, and in every case, such renunciation proved supremely auspicious. [2]

Love for Rām alone is the true relationship. Anyone worthy of friendship or reverence in this world is so only because of their love for Lord Rām. What is the use of applying collyrium to the eyes if it causes blindness? In the same way, if even one’s loved ones become obstacles in the path of God, one should renounce them and engage fully in devotion to God. [3]

Śrī Tulsīdās says that whoever’s association or teachings awaken exclusive love for the feet of the Lord is, in every way, our greatest benefactor, most worthy of worship, and dearer than life itself—this alone is my firm conviction. [4]
