Shri Dirgh Vishnu Temple, Mathura

In Varaha Purana, Narada Purana, Garg Sanhita and Srimad Bhagwat, this temple has been confirmed to be on the banks of Vishnu Ghat. There is a belief about this temple that this temple is of Krishna's era. The original temple no longer exists. It is also said that this temple was established by Lord Krishna's great grandson Bajranabh around 5500 years ago, but the present temple is built by King Patnimal of Banaras. It was constructed to commemorate the four-armed form of Lord Krishna and to save the Yamuna from the pilgrimage Prayag.
When Krishna, Baladeva and Their cowherd friends were proceeding to Kansa’s wrestling arena, Shridama and other sakhas asked Krishna, “Friend, are You going to the wrestling arena? Your body is small and tender. How will You kill the mighty Kansa?” Shri Krishna then displayed His huge (dirgha) form, carrying a conch shell, disk, club and lotus flower. Thus, the sakhas were convinced that their Kanhaiya could do anything by the mercy of Narayana and that Narayana sometimes manifested through Him. Happily, they danced towards the wrestling arena with Shri Krishna.
According to the Varaha Purana, Vishnu says that there is no place in this earth or space or Hades, which is as dear to me as Mathura. Mathura is my famous region and grants liberation.
