- Shri Soordas Ji, Soor Sagar, Vinay and Bhakti (44)

Oh! My mind! Keep not a company with beings opposed to the Lord Sri Hari!
Through their association, your intelligence will be corrupted for they cause obstructions in your devotion: of what benefit is their company? [1]
However much milk you make a snake drink, it cannot stop its poison. However much camphor you may feed a crow it will not turn white, whilst a dog will roll in the dirt even if it bathes in the Ganga. [2]
You might anoint a donkey with sandal paste but it will still sit in the dust; whilst a monkey will rip off and throw down any jewelry you adorn it with. Even after an elephant has bathed in the river it sprays itself with sand. [3]
Even if you fire your whole quiver of arrows at a rock it will not split. Therefore Surdasji now sings, "A black blanket cannot be dyed into another color. Hence give up the company of those who are opposed in your devotion." [4]
