Biography of Shri Vanshi Ali Ji

Genealogy:
Shri Nabha Das Ji has sung the character of Pandit Shri Narayan Mishra in Bhaktamal, who was the great authority of Shrimad Bhagwat. He was a Saraswat Brahmin of the Naval dynasty. By contemplating the verses of Shrimad Bhagwat, the love for Braj Dham was easily manifested in the heart of Pandit Narayan Mishra, and with the desire for Braj abode, he came to Mathura. While living in Mathura for the rest of his life, he attained Braj Raj (dust) here. His descendant Shri Pradyumna Goswami Ji lived in the service of his worshipful deity Shri Kishori Raman Ji in Lalit Kunj near Shringar Vat in Shri Dham Vrindavan. He was a very learned and influential person. He had hundreds of his disciples.

Birth :
The disciples of Shri Pradyumna Goswami built a famous temple in Delhi by the name of Bada Mandir (Ladili Ji Ka Mandir) which is still there. In the form of the son of Shri Pradyumn Goswami, Shri Vanshi Ali Ji, the promoter of the Lalit sect, appeared from the womb of Shrimati Krishnavati Ji on the first day of the bright fortnight in the month of Ashwin in 1707 AD. His parents named him Vanshidhar. Later the Acharya became famous as Shri Vanshi Ali.

Love towards Shri Radha's name by birth and an extraordinary pastime :
A strange incident happened as soon as he was born, the child Vanshidhar did not breastfeed his mother. Many efforts were made by the family members but they all were unsuccessful. All the family members got worried. Everyone started thinking that if the child does not drink milk, then how will he survive? At the same time, a Brajwasi from Barsana arrived there and came near the child, and started to play with him by reciting the name of Shri Radha. On hearing Radha's name, the child started breastfeeding. All the family members were pleased and gave many gifts to that Brajwasi.

Radiance of love towards Shri Radha :
Now the age of Vanshidhar Ji started increasing gradually. At the age of 5, the expression of his extraordinary love towards Shri Radha began to manifest through his playful activities. While playing, the child would chant the name of Shri Radha and sing hymns related to Shri Radha. Everyone loved him very much. Vanshidhar Ji used to go regularly for a bath in the Yamuna after which he recites the verses of Srimadbhagwat.

Childhood: (Revelation of the eternity of Panchajanya conch shell)
By birth, Shri Vanshi Ali Ji was endowed with divine talent. He had absorbed the entire Vedas and much Sanskrit literature in his childhood and was a unique scholar of logic. He used to lecture elaborately on the Sanskrit verses of Shrimad Bhagwat in such a way that even great scholars would be amazed. Once upon a time Maharaj Sawai Jai Singh, the ruler of Jaipur at that time, desired to have the darshan of Goswami Shri Pradyumna Ji. The Maharaj humbly invited him to his court. Ten-year-old Vanshi Ali Ji also came with his father. One day, on the temple premises of Shri Radha Govind Dev Ji, Maharaj Jai Singh was listening to Shrimadbhagwat. After that, the king asked all the scholars to solve one of his doubts which He asked as such-
"After receiving all the knowledge from Guru Sandipani Ji, Lord Sri Krishna went to take Guru-son as Guru-Dakshina and after killing Panchjanya (Shankhasur) the Lord held that conch shell, but Devaki-Vasudeva had a vision of the four-armed form of Lord even before birth. Which was adorned with the Conch Shell, Mace, Sudarshan Disk, and Lotus. So where did the conch shell come from?
The whole scholarly society was silent on this question of Maharaj Jaisingh, then looking at his ten-year-old boy, father Shri Pradyumna Goswami Ji asked him to answer. The boy Vanshidhar said –
"Maharaj! All the weapons of the Lord are His 'Parshad' (servant) who are conscious and eternal. Panchjanya became an asura (demon) due to the curse and to free him, Lord Krishna killed him and he was freed and reunited in his eternal form. For eg; Sanakadik sages had cursed the Lord's Parshad Jai-Vijay, who after three births got free again and went to their eternal counselor form; Similarly, Panchajanya also became an Asura due to the curse and after attaining salvation through the Lord, he again attained the form of his eternal Parshad."
King’s surprise knew no bounds after receiving this scriptural and satisfactory answer from the mouth of a ten-year-old boy, Vanshidhar. Maharaj with folded hands said to Shri Pradyumna Goswami Ji -
"This child is not ordinary human, He appears to be divine."
After this, the Maharaj respectfully presented the gifts with immense wealth to Shri Pradyumna Goswami.

Married Life :
At the age of fifteen years, Shri Vanshidhar Ji got married. When he turned twenty, he was blessed with a son, who was named Pundarikaksha.

Spiritual Life :
Divine expressions of love by hearing the badhayi song of Shri Radha and arrival to Vrindavan:
When Shri Vanshi Ali turned 28, his father passed away. After a year of his father's death, suddenly he got flooded with the love of Shri Radha. When Pandit Radhakrishna of Radha Kund sang badhayi song in the celebration of Radha Ashtami in the temple of Delhi -

“Ras Barse Ri Heli Keerat Mahal Mein.”
"Oh Sakhi, the divine nectar is pouring in the palace of Keerti Maharani"

At that time Shri Vanshi Ali was so engrossed in love that there was a torrent of tears of love. He lay on the ground unconscious for one and a half hours. On regaining consciousness, His heart was filled with so much love and gaiety that in that year, He spent three thousand rupees for the celebration of Radhashtami. In the second year also two thousand rupees were spent on the celebration of Radhashtami. The mother was annoyed that His son is spending all amount on Radhaashtami, so She said - Do not spend so much in the future. Shri Vanshidhar Ji became sad and said: "What is the use of money? Is it not only for the service of God?"
Vanshidhar Ji was displeased and came to Vrindavan alone. After a few days, there was a lot of loot, and a massacre [in Nadir Shah's period] took place in Delhi. In that loot, all the money from the temple was taken away, which the mother had forbidden to spend in the celebration of Radha Ashtami. At Lalit Kunj near Ras Mandal in Vrindavan, Vanshidhar Ji started worshiping the divine couple Shri Radha Krishn with devotion.

Spiritual initiation from Shri Lalita Sakhi:
In Lalit Kunj, on the orders of Shri Radharani, Mahasakhi Shri Lalita Ji gave mantra-initiation to Shri Vanshidhar Ji, which he himself has mentioned –

Guruh Shri Lalita Gyeya Sa Tu Tasyah Paraskhi.
Tattva Swarupa Cha Bhaktasya Radhatopyadhika Mam.

"Shri Vanshi Ali Ji's guru is Sri Lalita Ji, the foremost Sakhi of Shri Radharani. For Vanshi Ali Ji, His Guru Shri Lalita Sakhi Ji is even superior to the Supreme Authority Shri Radharani, the beloved of the Rasiks."

The sense of this belief of Shri Vanshi Ali Ji is clear from this couplet of Shri Kabir Das Ji -

“Guru Govind Dou Khade, Kaake Lagoon Paay.
Balihari Guru Aapko Jin Govinda Diyo Bataay."

After the initiation of the mantra, Shri Lalita Ji ordered Vanshidhar to go to Barsana for bhajan. At the same time, She also blessed that Shriji (Shri Radha) will give her darshan in Barsana.

Darshan of Shri Radharani in Barsana:
Vanshidhar Ji came to Barsana. Now everyone started calling him by the name of Vanshi Ali. At the place where people used to throw garbage in Rangili Gali (street) in Barsana, he put his asana (seat) and sat there remembering Shri Radha.
A Maiya (lady) said - Oh Baba! “Toi ghure pai hi bhajan karibai ki thaur mili ka?” (Have you only got a littering place to sit and worship?)
Vanshi Ali Ji said, Maiya, Here I will easily get the Raj [dust] of Barsana. When You throw garbage, the dust will fly and touch my head. This way I will get the dust of the devotees of Shri Radha. Out of this greed, I have put my seat here.
Vanshi Ali Ji did bhajan by lying in the place of garbage for 12 years. Shriji (Shri Radha) out of utmost mercy, gave darshan to him.

Achievement of Sakhi form in Barsana:
One day Vanshi Ali Ji went upstairs to visit the Shriji temple. Shri Chintamani Goswami Ji was in the service of Shriji. Shriji was seated in Jagmohan. Vanshi Ali Ji started climbing up on Jagmohan in his divine state. Goswami Ji is repeatedly refusing to stop him (no one is allowed to come close to Shriji except the Goswamis even today). But Vanshi Ali Ji didn't hear anything. Being compelled, Goswami Ji threw his khadaun (wooden footwear) and hit him. At that time Goswami Ji was surprised to see that Vanshi Ali Ji is talking to Goswami Ji in one form (human form) and serving Shri Ji in another form (Sakhi form). Goswami Ji felt very remorse and also apologized to Vanshi Ali Ji. Vanshi Ali Ji said – By your grace, Shriji has made me her Sakhi, from today you have become my pilgrimage guru. Since then, the descendants of Vanshi Ali have been considering the descendants of Chintamani Ji as their pilgrimage guru.

Pari Rahaun Vrishbhanu Ke Dvaarain, Jahaan Meri Ladili Radha.
Khelat Aavai Sukh Upajaavai, Praanan Ki Ye Saadha.
Keerati Kul Ujiyaari Pyari, Hiy Ki Chain Agaadha.
Thaur Nahin ‘vanshiali’ Hiy Mein, Aur Lagai Sab Baadha.

Establishment of new sect (Lalit sect):
After receiving mantra initiation from Shri Lalita Ji, Shri Vanshi Ali started the 'Lalit Sampradaya'. Giving utmost importance to Sri Lalita Sakhi as the Acharya of the sampradaya, he says –
“There is neither entry of Vishnu, nor of any other deity in this Nikunja Rasa; one can get this nectar only by the grace of Lalita Ji. What to say, even Shri Krishna, the son of Shri Nanda himself, cannot get this rare rasa without the grace of Shri Lalita Ju."

Getting Shri Vanshi Ali Ji to be felicitated by Lord Jagannath as the incarnation of the flute of Shri Priya Ji:
According to the belief of the Lalit sect, Vanshi Ali Ji was the incarnation of Shri Radha Ji's flute. It is heard that once Vanshi Ali Ji went on a journey to Jagannath Puri. At that time, when Vanshi Ali Ji came to the temple to have darshan of Lord Jagannath Ji, then by giving a dream to the pandas (priests of the temple), Lord Jagannath welcomed Vanshi Ali Ji as the incarnation of the flute of Shri Priya Ji.

Text Composition:
The worship of the divine couple in Nikunj Palace by Shri Vanshi Ali Ji is unique in itself, whose unique philosophy is found in the book 'Vrishabhanupur Shatak', which is accessible only by the grace of Shri Radharani. Apart from 'Vrisbhanupur Shatak', Radha Stotra, Lalita Mangal, and Ashtapadi, etc. are the main compositions of Shri Vanshi Ali Ji.
While living in Lalit Kunj, he composed many texts. He wrote two texts in Sanskrit named 'Radha Tattva Prakash' and ‘Radha Siddhanta’. He did Sanskrit commentary on Radha Panchadhyai Mokshavad, Shakti Swatantra Paramarsh, and Radha Upanishad. In Braj Bhasha, he composed Shri Radhika Maharaas, Shri Ladili Ju Ki Badhai, and many other texts.

Disciple Tradition:
Vanshi Ali Ji had many disciples. Kishori Ali Ji and Albeli Ali Ji are more famous. The former name of Kishori Ali was Jagannath Bhatt and he was a resident of Mathura. He was very attached to his wife. Suddenly his wife passed, whose name was Kishori. Now in a deep state of pangs of separation, he came in Barsana, and in the night, he started calling out, Kishori! Kishori! Shri Kishori Ji heard the call of compassion. Shriji said – Who is calling me in such a painful voice? Lalita Ji said – He is not calling you, he is calling his wife whose name was Kishori. But Shriji said in the most naive and compassionate - I am the only Kishori in the whole Barsana, bring him here. Lalita Ji brought him. By having such a spontaneous darshan of Shriji, he became extremely grateful. Lalita Ji then advised him to take initiation from Vanshi Ali Ji and ordered him to do bhajan. After initiation, the name was Kishori Ali. He later became the Guru of the King of Jaipur.
Apart from these, Ratan Ali and Ramavat Ali, etc. have also become disciples of Vanshi Ali Ji.

Vanshi Ali Ji's detachment:
While living in Vrindavan, Vanshi Ali Ji used to live in supreme detachment and constant remembrance of divine pastimes. In spite of many rich servants, he does not keep anything other than tumbi (a pot made of dried pumpkin) and Gudadi (a piece of cloth) with him. But when the festival of Radha Ashtami came, he celebrated the festival with great pomp by spending twenty to twenty-five thousand rupees. Whenever he would narrate the pastimes of Shrimadbhagwat, divine feelings would become elated. He used to interpret the verses of Shrimadbhagwat in many different ways with a supernatural new meaning.

Leela Samvaran (Disappearance):
On Ashwin Shukla Pratipada in 1765 AD, while remembering the name of Shri Kishori Ji in Lalit Kunj located in Vrindavan, Vanshi Ali Ji entered in Nitya Nikunj in the eternal form of Sakhi. Here his tomb is situated in Lalit Nikunj. Radhavallabh sect and Shri Haridasi sect have a special influence on the doctrine of Vanshi Ali Ji.

The nature of his worship of divine couple in Nitya Vihar is the same as that of these sects. Their opinion is the same as Shri Radhavallabh sect and Shri Haridasi sect. Shri Radha is sevya (worshipful deity) in the Radhavallabh sect and Shri Krishna is the servant, whereas, in the Haridasi sect, Shri Lalita Ji is the guru and Shri Krishna has to depend on Lalita Ji's grace for the attainment of Shri Radha Ji.
The main temple of the Lalit sect is the temple of Ladli Ji in Jaipur. Acharya Dr. Shri Sanjay Goswami Ji is the present Mahant at Lalit Kunj.
