Pastimes :
All the pilgrimages of Giriraj Ji are considered as his body parts, in the same order, this place has been considered as Punch (tail). The mythological name of Naval Kund is Punch Kund. That's why this place is famous by the name Punchari.
"Puchh Kunde Tatha Puchham"
- Garg Samhita, Giriraj Khand (8/11)
According to the Brajwasis -
This place is considered as Punch (tail) of Peacock-shaped Giriraj Ji (in some sense the cow-shaped Giriraj Ji). That is why the name of the village is Punchari. On the south end of Giriraj Ji, there is a temple of Lautha of Punchri, in which his long and wide Deity smeared with vermillion is seated. When Shri Krishn started going to Dwarka, he asked his dear friend Lautha to come along. Lautha said - "I will not go anywhere else renouncing Braj, but without you, I will not even accept food and water" then Shri Krishn said - "Till I do not come back, you cannot give up life without food and water. You keep the attendance of the devotees who are doing the circumambulation of Govardhan here." Since then Lautha is doing penance here, without eating or drinking.
Shri Krishna went to Dwarka and the gopis remained here. There was 9 lakh Gopis and all were searching Shri Krishn all over Braj. A gopi knew that a friend of Krishna lived in Govardhan and was a witness to the devotees circumambulating Govardhan. She told to all Gopis that let's go to him and ask about Krishn. Then all the Gopis came here in Govardhan to ask Lautha Ji about Krishn. One Gopi said to the other "Sakhi Tu Puch Ri", and the other Gopi said to other Gopi "Sakhi Tu Puch Ri", which means to ask. So this place got the name "Punchari" When the Gopis returned after asking Lautha Ji about Krishn, Lautha Ji got the name "Punchari Ka Lautha".
Instead of food, butter and sugar candy is offered to him. The circumambulation of Govardhan is not complete without the darshan of Punchari Ka Lautha as per the orders of Shri Krishn.
Ann Khaay Nahin Paani Peevai Tou Tu Parayau Silauta .
Doodh Na Chhodai Dadhi Na Chhodai Are Tu To Pi Gayo Chhaachh Kathauta.
Tu Dhani Dhani Punchari Ke Lautha .
By saying this, the people of Braj give him great respect. With the 'Jai Sound' of Giriraj Ji, the people of Braj definitely chant the Lautha of Punchari.
