A sakhī, describing the Holī festival of Vṛndāvana to her intimate companion, says: “O friend! In the Holī of the divine couple, such streams of colored water were sprayed from waterguns, and such clouds of crimson powder arose, that everything was dyed red.” [1]

Śyāmasundara became red, Kiśorī Jī too became red, the maidens of Braja were colored alike, and even the trees and lakes were covered in red. Parrots, cuckoos, and swans — all were transformed into the same hue. [2]

All the cows and even the sacred dust of Braja were reddened, and every cowherd boy was covered in that same color. Jagadguru Śrī Kṛpālu Jī Mahārāja explains that outwardly all were colored by the red of Holī, yet inwardly every heart was drenched in loving devotion of Lāḍilī–Lāla. [3]
