(Kavitt)
Sundar-Badan Radhe, Sobha Ko Sadan Tero,
Badan Banayo Chaar-Badan Banayakai. [1]
Taki Ruchi Lain Ko Udit Bhayau Rain-Pati,

- Shri Matiram

O beautiful Śrī Rādhā! Your divine face is the very abode of unparalleled beauty and splendor, which the creator, the four-faced Brahmā, fashioned with utmost care, employing the full artistry of all four faces. [1]

Desiring to steal some of the radiance of Your face, the lord of the night, the moon, arose. But in his foolishness, by spreading his hands in the form of his rays, he revealed his own attempt at theft. [2]

Poet Matirāma says that lotus-seated Brahmā, recognizing this night-roaming moon as a thief, became greatly angered and sentenced him to a severe punishment. [3]

Thus, as punishment for his crime, the moon is condemned to wander day and night around the celestial realm, while the dark mark upon his face is nothing but the blackening smeared upon a thief’s face for his attempted theft. [4]
